Retrofit programs excite most families, over potential savings – as they typically give homeowners rebates between $500 and $2,000, after having their home audited. Then, the money is put toward renovations such as new, energy-efficient furnaces, windows and insulation. Northerners in Ontario are having difficulty getting an audit scheduled and in place, with an accessible professional: “Sarah Campbell, who represents Kenora-Rainy River for the NDP, said there are no certified energy advisers in her riding and the closest one is 490 kilometres away, in Thunder Bay, and she said homeowners were being asked to pay travel expenses.” In response to this complaint, Ontario Energy Minister Glenn Thibeault says he will help make the energy retrofit program available to all Ontario residents – and will “ensure auditors are hired in under-served areas and that any travel costs are covered by the companies.” Good news for Ontarians – especially our Northern friends.
